Roger Baker is the principal lawyer at Baker Law Firm. His practice focuses on commercial litigation, with particular emphasis on civil disputes and insolvency matters.

Before entering the legal profession, Roger spent more than a decade as an executive and director in Calgary's upstream oil and gas sector. This experience gives him a practical understanding of the commercial realities faced by clients in energy, finance, and related industries.

Roger holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Calgary and a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Geology from the University of Saskatchewan. He has appeared before the Court of King's Bench in Alberta and the superior courts of British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Ontario. Several of his files have resulted in written decisions from the appellate courts in both Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Litigation Experience

Roger was lead counsel in each matter listed on the firm's Reported Decisions page. His trial experience includes numerous Provincial Court and Small Claims trials, a nine-day Court of King's Bench of Alberta defamation trial in Authentic Southside Taekwon-Do Club v Taylor, and a six-day Ontario Superior Court of Justice trial involving defamation and civil sexual battery for which a decision is pending.

He has appeared on numerous special applications and appeals, and regularly appears on the Court of King's Bench of Alberta Commercial List in insolvency matters. He acts for plaintiffs and defendants, creditors and debtors, and appellants and respondents. Baker Law Firm serves as Alberta counsel for a specialized class-action plaintiffs' firm.

Business Career

From 2002 to 2004, Roger worked as a geologist at NYSE-listed Enterra Energy Corp. From 2004 to 2005, he was lead geologist at NYSE-listed JED Oil. From 2005 to 2012, he served as president, CEO, and a director of Neo Exploration Inc., where he managed approximately 20 employees.

During Roger's tenure, Neo Exploration raised more than $150 million in equity, debt, and joint-venture financing. His work included acquisitions of smaller oil companies and managing the development and drilling of hundreds of oil wells.
